Satisfactory Academic Progress

To be eligible for student financial aid, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. The Financial Aid and Scholarships (FAS) office has established guidelines (based on federal regulations) for evaluating your progress. FAS standards of SAP are not exactly the same as the academic standards of the University or of any department or professional school.

If you become ineligible for financial aid because you have not met Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, you may file an appeal if you believe that you have experienced extenuating circumstances.

  • Schedule an appointment with a financial aid counselor to discuss your situation. If you are eligible to appeal, the counselor will provide you with the appeal form.
  • Complete and submit the appeal form to Financial Aid & Scholarships. Include all required supporting documents and a complete written narrative — this is an opportunity for you to include any letters of support from professors, physicians, or others involved in the extenuating circumstances.

The Financial Aid Appeals Committee will review the appeal within 2-6 weeks, depending on the volume of appeals submitted. You will be notified of the decision by email.

  • If your appeal is approved, you will meet with a financial aid counselor to review and sign your appeal decision letter.
  • Committee decisions are final and are not subject to further review. If your appeal is denied, the email will include criteria you must meet to be eligible to submit an appeal in a subsequent semester.

SAP appeals for summer session

If your SAP appeal is denied, incomplete, or still pending before summer session begins, you have the following options:

  • Pay your summer tuition, fees, housing, and other KU charges, using your own funds, by the due date or seek other Financial Assistance through one of the following resources:
    • KU Endowment Association Loan
      KU Endowment is an independent, nonprofit corporation serving as the official fund-raising and fund-management organization for KU. Through the years, many KU alumni and friends have made gifts for the purpose of providing low-interest loans to deserving students.     • Private/Alternative Loans
      Private/alternative loans are funds from private lenders to help cover educational costs. A student may want to consider a private loan when federal financial aid is not enough to cover the student's cost of attendance (COA).   • Do not pay by the due date and be assessed the $50 late payment fee. (Your tuition and fees must be fully paid by the 15th of the following month to avoid an additional $50 late payment fee.)
  • Go through late enrollment. You will be charged a late enrollment fee.
  • Officially withdraw from your summer classes. (Withdraw before the first day of classes to avoid adverse SAP implications.) If you re-enroll through late enrollment, you may not be able to take the same classes.
